The upcoming World Green Building Week 2026 is a useful reminder that the next challenge for the built environment is not simply designing more sustainable buildings. It is delivering buildings that perform as intended in operation.
This year's World Green Building Council campaign, hashtag#BuildItReady, focuses on buildings that are resilient, efficient and capable of supporting future opportunities. WorldGBC highlights the role of green buildings and retrofits in dealing with climate risk, energy volatility, resource efficiency and long-term asset value.
For MEP engineering, that raises a more practical question: How do we close the gap between design intent and operational performance?
That requires more than specifying efficient equipment.
It means considering the whole building lifecycle:
→ Design — establish measurable performance objectives
→ Procurement — make sure the selected systems can deliver them
→ Construction — protect the design intent through installation and coordination
→ Commissioning — verify that systems actually perform
→ Operation — use controls, metering and building data to understand what is happening
→ Optimisation — continue improving performance after handover
This is where MEP engineering, SMART systems and building performance increasingly converge.
A building can have an excellent energy model, efficient plant and strong sustainability credentials — and still underperform once occupied.
The engineering challenge is therefore shifting from:
"Have we designed an efficient building?"
to:
"Can we demonstrate that the building is operating efficiently?"
That means post-occupancy monitoring, controls optimisation, commissioning and continuous performance verification need to be considered as part of the engineering strategy rather than something that happens after the design is finished.
Sustainability is not an add-on to engineering. It is an engineering outcome that needs to survive the journey from design intent to real-world operation.
